Roblox: Paradise for Predators or a Space for Family Imagination?
Recent headlines have branded Roblox a “paradise for predators,” pointing to lawsuits that accuse the company of corporate negligence in protecting children. As a father of two young kids, my immediate instinct is simple: delete the app and shield my children. But fear alone isn’t the answer. I want to approach this issue from two perspectives: as a parent, and as an active member of the video game industry.
The Industry’s Responsibility
As professionals in the gaming ecosystem, we have a duty to look past short-term gains. Protecting players — especially children — should be a cornerstone of our industry’s ethics.
Parental Controls: Available, but Underused
Roblox provides several parental control tools that often go unnoticed: experience blocking to filter out unsuitable games, content controls, and communication blocking. What matters is being proactive in our children’s digital literacy and safety.
Digital Literacy and My Family’s Experience
Today, digital literacy means preparing our children to recognize online warning signs: strangers pushing for private conversations, invitations to external platforms like Discord, or behavior that feels uncomfortable. On a personal note, I enjoy Roblox with my kids. We’ve even organized virtual playdates with classmates. Used wisely, Roblox can be an amazing platform for creativity, self-expression, and community. The question isn’t whether Roblox should exist, but how we make it safer for children.
